Drunk driver on motorcycle hit my boat !!! |
Lead | |
|
This is a follow up to a post earlier this week in case anyone was wondering. Last Friday night, a man driving a motorcycle hit my boat at a high rate of speed
while I was making a right turn into my driveway. The man was airlifted to the trauma center and was in bad shape. He is now out of the hospital and suffered a
broken leg and injured back. The man driving the motorcycle was charged with driving while intoxicated. My boat has alot of damage. The transom was cracked,
the trailer is totaled, the jack plate and steering system needs to be replaced but the motor seems to be ok. With any luck my insurance company will cut a
check to repair the damage next week. This is the first time I've been without a boat in 8 years and am not a happy person right now. My hope is have the
boat back on the water by June 1st. All I can do now is wait.

Sorry to hear the fellow on the motorcycle was broken and scratched up. This could have been worse for all. He will mend and you
will have a new looking Cat soon. Just have to be patient . I dont think he wants to hit another PUMA!!!!!!!

"With any luck my insurance company will cut a check to repair the damage next week. " Your insurance company!!! What about his insurance company??
Think something is wrong here with that comment.

A good insurance company will pay quickly to get his boat fixed, then go after the driver's insurance company to reimburse them. I once had something
similar with a car parked on a campus where I worked, guy wound his bike out, and unfortunately I was parked in the curve that he could not make at that speed.
My insurance company (no longer my company) refused to pay since it was clearly his fault and he had insurance. My car sat at a shop for 3 months after it
was repaired, waiting on his insurance company to pay the bill.
this case sounds like it is working the right way... |

NJ is a no fault state so the fastest and easiest way to handle a claim is through my insurance. My insurance will go after the other insurance company for
reimbursement. The repair has already been started and my insurance company sent me a check today. The only problem is that it is short by around $4500. I have
put a claim in with the other insurance company to recover this money but it may take several months if they cover it at all. I may have to take the driver of
the motorcycle to court to recover the money but that remains to be seen. Bottom line is that $4500 will come out of my pocket now. It is a raw deal but I want
the boat back in the water by June.

Whoa that a big chunk for something that is not your fault. Is this your Car Insurance that shorted you or your Boat Insurance. That BS I think your insurance
company played you because you wanted your boat back so soon they got you to settle. NOT RIGHT what Company ?
What do you pay Insurance for if they are not going to cover you properly. |

My boat insurance is who I put the claim through. I did not have the trailer insured for nearly enough. I read a post a few days ago here asking about how much
to insure a trailer for. My advise is $5000 to $6000 on the trailer depending on extras and also an additional $1000 to $1500 for shipping. My mistake was
insuring it only for the purchase price. I did not take into account the fact that I got a good deal on the entire boat package and shipping costs on a new
trailer. I don't blame my insurance company. The man driving the motorcycle drunk is the one to blame here. His insurance company is dragging there feet as
expected and I don't even know if he has enough coverage to pay for the damage. All I want to do is get back on the water. Everything else should work
itself out in time.
