I hear frogs are good baits up there. And I hear alot about sweet beavers with 1 oz to 1 1/4 oz weights to punch thru the grass. Can you guys suggest any other baits from the back seat?

Potomac From the Back Seat |
Lead | |

I'm fishing the BFL on the Potomac next weekend (July 11th). I"m fishing it from the backseat. I've never been anywhere near the river, and we
dont have any grass around here where I live. I"ve always wanted to try fishing up there, so I signed up for a BFL to see what its like. Its a (5) hour
drive away, but I just had to satisfy a curiousity.

There are other dominant patterns there that involve isolated cover (logs etc.) and off shore drops or structure around rock piles. Both of those would require
a crank bait of some type. The Potomac can require most of your arsenal, depending on your draw.

Thanks BCB. I was hoping to pair down my tackle, but it sounds like I'd better take more than I thought.
Cranking breaks in the summer time is what I normally do around here (High Rock Lake).....so that I'd be comfortable with. Thanks BCB |

My non-boater in the last bass weekend series on the Potomac took 4th throwing a 4" sinko behind me. Oh, he also got the bigger frog bite later in the day
too. It was just his time. We had a fun day and I was happy to see him check.

I've fished the river a ton in the past. Everything said in the thread above will work. Also try a swim jig around the grasslines and try rockpiles away
from the vegetation towards the channel if you are not getting good bites. Where to fish on the rockpiles depends on the current at the time.

When the sun is high a heavy weighted beaver is hard to beat fishing the mats near the edges, you have to pitch the bait high and let it free fall to penetrate
sometimes even with an ounce and a half.

Potomac clues | ||

I have fished the Potomac for the past 15 years. First of all start reading the reports at VA Outdoors web site. They are truthful and accurate. Read the
thread under Potomac River fishing reports called " Potomac river clues". It will tell you everything you need to know about fishing tides and grass.
You will have to go where the boater takes you so you will be at his mercy. Right now the color back is the ticket for frogs and senkos. Green pumpkin and red
shad are good backup colors. Right now and depending where you will be, you will need between 1/2 oz and 1 oz sinkers for flipping. Make sure you use at least
a #6 hook for your frogs and at least one heavy action rod with 30# braid or stronger for frog fishing. I use a owner 1/16th oz swim bait hook with 17# Flora
for flipping Senkos into the holes in the grass. The river is healthy from DC to Aquia creek on the Potomac so it is possiable to catch quality fish almost
anywhere. There is a ST Judes tournament on Fri the 10th so if you have access to a computer check the reports on VA Outdoors web site Fri night. Good luck!

Well, having never been to the Potomac, I must say, its a big body of water. The night before the tournament I stopped by Warbirds (tackle shop) and talked to
the owner. He and I discussed fishing the Potomac, and his advice was to fish a frog as long as possilble on the thickest grass possible.
Got paired with a guy who'd only been on the Potomac two days (the Saturday before and the part of the day Friday before). Took off Saturday morning out of Leesylvania park and went right......and rode for an hour. The waves were head high. Got soaked. We left Leesylvania, went right, rode for a long ways, then curled back to the left into a creek (dont remember the name....starts with a "N"). Went to the back of that creek and flipped laydown trees till 11am. I caught one 3lbs 7oz on a chigger crawl. Boater didnt get a bite. I didnt see any grass mats down there at all. Just standing grass and laydowns. Left out of there, came out of that creek, and went straight across the Potomac. Boater caught one small bass (1lb 4oz) at 1pm on a white spinnerbait. Wind picked up to about 20mph, so boater said we'd better head back. Waves were now well over my head. After boater speared three waves, I was very careful and simply said that I usually take these sized waves at an angle. On the eighth speared wave, we were swamped. Water was up to my seat in the boat, my tackle box was floating around, I was soaked. Water was lapping the underside of his console.....first time I"ve ever seen that. I"ve gotta hand it to that Yamaha he had though.....partially full of water and that HPDI would still put that boat on plane. Idled over to the bank and there was a patch of grass there. I sent my frog over there, and in ten minutes, got five good bites, but no hookups. Cranked up and rode the back of one big wave all the way back past the power station. Then rattled my teeth for the last 5 minutes of the ride. Bottom line.....got my rear end handed to me....but I learned where I dont want to go when I go back! Boater was a very nice guy, but this was his first year fishing tournaments.....and he'd only had his boat a short period of time. I think that place could be alot of fun and I cant wait to go back with my boat. I kissed my Jaguar's carpet when I got home! Thanks for all of the help guys.......I just didnt execute it very well. |

Nanjemoy is a very good creek at times of the year, though when they are in the grass, it is strictly tidal influenced. The tide dictates everything there and
you must catch in incoming or outgoing and be fishing there when it is so.
Thanks for the update! |
