Water Pressure? |
Lead | |
|
I have an 05 Yamaha HPDI 200 HP. The water pressure the last time I was out was 12 - 15 PSI @ WOT. The time before it was @ 25 PSI but the water temp was 20
degrees cooler. I noticed this last year also. Does water temp affect water pressure that much? I don't get to fish as much as I used to so I am curious if
this normal or if it is time for a new impeller.

Never seen this happen. Has it been two years or more since you replaced the water pump impeller?

We have seen slight differences, though not ten pounds.

It's been two years since I last changed it. Looks like it is time for a new impeller. Thanks for the replies.

Brian, I have an 07 HPDI. Last time I was in the water I encountered the exact same thing, and I mean even the same numbers. The water temp was 93 during a
blistering heat wave. I'm going to replace my impeller also. I don't see how an impeller can just all of a sudden go bad though. Did you notice your
water stream being noticeably weaker during idle also?

reeldeal,
Yes the water stream at idle seemed weaker. I don't get to fash as much as I used to. Last year when this happened, it was after a period of time when I had not fished in a couple of months. I started going more and my pressure got back to normal. It may be that since I don't fish enough, the impeller gets stiff and won't pull enough water. It's time to replace it anyway to be on the safe side. I have never had any problems with overheating and I think 12 - 15 PSI is acceptable. This is just weird. Brian |

We think Yamaha prefers more pounds of pressure.

My last motor was a Yamaha and mine did the same thing. I changed the impeller after two years...still did the same thing. Believe it or not, I hooked up to
the water hose and removed the jackets on the lower unit and let it flush for 5 minutes.............problem solved. My warning horn would go off at idle as
well. "Mushroom" shaped pressure relief valve will stick if it has one grain of sand on it. My water pressure had dropped to about 12 psi
WOT....same as yours. I removed the valve and cleaned it. Try this before changing the impeller.

ClintB, where exactly is the mushroom shaped pressure relief valve located that you are talking about cleaning?

It's located underneath the bottom right cylinder (standing behind the motor facing the bow) The "poppit" valve has a metal cover with two hex
head bolts...the cover is football shaped (oblong). It has a spring loaded plastic valve inside...if your's is not mushroom shaped on one end...get the
new style. You'll probably need a new gasket as well. Kit online is less than $10 for new valve and gasket. IF you do have the mushroom style...then
pull it out and see if it has even just one grain of sand on it. Clean the opening and flush your motor with the water hose for 5 minutes. I put on the new
impeller first and was !@#$ when I dropped it in the water and same thing 10-12 psi @ WOT. Clean the valve and flush the motor
before dropping the lower unit and replacing the impeller. Be patient, it's kinda tricky to get the cover and gasket back on.....might need an extra set
of hands to help you out.
