Pro xs engine noise |
Lead | |
|
I have a new 09 Puma with a 250 Pro XS and was wondering what could be causing a loose washer or bolt noise at around 3000 to 3500 rpm coming from inside the
cowl or outside the engine? I know that there is a harmonic resonance from the reed slap but it seems to be causing a vibration somewhere.
Thanks, Josh |

The mid rpm whistle is the air compressor sometimes. The rattle is often the lower motor mount covers rattling and not under the cowl.

Do you have one of the new ladders, I have one on my 08 Cougar FTD and it took me several trips out to figure out what was making that noise. Was very
concerned until I realized what it was.

Make sure it is not the E-ladder rattling. Sometimes at that RPM it sounds like coming from cowl. Mine does it from time to time.

I have the Pro XS on my R boat and it makes that noise. I think it is the small covers on the lower unit (sorry, dont know the technical name). They are on
each side.

Most of this is caused by harmonics and thus the rattles of various components. The boys in black are aware of the harmonics noise.

I have also been told its a reed rattle. Mash it harder the Mercs love that anyway.

It is not reed rattle.

You would need superman-type hearing to hear the reeds. They don't exactly rattle, they buzz and not loud enough to hear, even if you go to the 7-petal
reed cages. Some of the mercs from the racing division even came with Boyesen fiber reeds that you could not hear with a stethoscope. I helped a friend try
to find a similar noise. Tried laying on the back of the boat (carefully of course) while he drove. It appeared to be coming from the lower mid-section, so
your motor mount cover idea could be the issue. It's definitely harmonic-related however as higher engine speeds make it go away, his sounds off in the
3500 range roughly. (this is a pro-XS 250). I was not willing to hang over the back and try to feel the vibration.
